A trip to the Washington Coast is an opportunity to experience a unique and beautiful natural environment. But with its famously unpredictable weather, packing can be a challenge. This guide will help you prepare for your getaway to Ocean Shores, ensuring you stay comfortable and ready for anything.

The Golden Rule: Layers and Rain Gear

The key to packing for the Washington Coast is to think in layers. The coastal climate is often cooler and breezier than inland areas, and conditions can change quickly. A sunny afternoon can easily turn into a cool, misty evening. Even in the summer, you’ll want to have a variety of clothing options.

Year-Round Packing List:

  • Clothing: A mix of T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, and sweaters (fleece or wool) is a good start. You’ll also want to bring multiple pairs of pants. For the cooler months, thermals are a great addition.
  • Outerwear: A waterproof and windproof jacket is a must. Waterproof pants are also highly recommended, especially if you plan on spending a lot of time on the beach.
  • Footwear: Waterproof shoes or boots with good traction are essential for exploring the beach. Rain boots are a practical choice for deeper puddles.
  • Accessories: A beanie or warm hat, gloves, and a scarf are useful, especially in the cooler months. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also necessary year-round, as UV rays can be strong even on overcast days.

Packing for Ocean Shores Activities

Your packing list should also be influenced by the activities you have planned.

  • Beach & Water Activities: The beaches of Ocean Shores are perfect for driving (in designated areas), beachcombing, kite flying, and bonfires. For these activities, a windbreaker and sturdy, waterproof footwear are key. If you’re interested in water sports like surfing, a wetsuit is essential due to the cold Pacific waters. Duck Lake offers a calmer freshwater alternative for kayaking and paddleboarding.
  • Outdoor Recreation & Wildlife: The North Jetty is a great spot for storm watching and observing marine life. The nearby Bottle Beach State Park is a designated stop on the Washington State Birding Trail. If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, don’t forget your binoculars. Comfortable, waterproof hiking shoes are a must for exploring trails like the Weatherwax Trail.
  • Indoor & Town Activities: On rainy days, you can explore the Coastal Interpretive Center or the town’s many shops and art galleries. For dining, Galway Bay Irish Pub offers an authentic experience, while Ocean Pours Taproom and Elk Head Tap Room are great for beer lovers. While most places accept credit cards, it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand for smaller, local businesses. A cooler is also a practical item to bring for transporting any fresh seafood you might buy from the Westport Marina.

A Note on Weather

As the popular Pacific Northwest saying goes, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad gear.” By packing strategically, you can ensure a comfortable and memorable stay in Ocean Shores, no matter what the weather brings.
