Choose freshwater over open surf

The interconnected freshwater lakes and canals around Ocean Shores are generally the approachable choice for recreational paddling. The Pacific is cold, powerful, and unsuitable for casual kayaking or paddleboarding without specific ocean experience, equipment, and a professionally informed plan.

Beginners should start with a short out-and-back route close to a recognized launch. Wind can make a return trip much harder, particularly on a paddleboard.

Duck Lake and the canal network

Duck Lake connects to roughly 23 miles of sheltered freshwater canals with a posted five-mile-per-hour speed limit. North Bay Park and Chinook Park are useful public launch points to investigate; access and dock conditions should be checked before relying on them. The low-speed system suits kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, hydrobikes, and quiet electric boats far better than it suits a casual attempt on the Pacific.

Rental choices may include single and tandem kayaks, inflatable paddleboards, delivered canoes, hydrobikes, and enclosed electric boats. Ask where the rented craft may go, what safety equipment is included, who may operate it, and when it must be returned.

Basic water preparation

• Wear a properly fitted personal flotation device for the entire outing.
• Secure a phone and warm layer in a waterproof bag.
• Keep children within immediate reach and choose equipment rated for each paddler.
• Avoid alcohol, darkness, poor visibility, strong wind, and uncertain access points.
• Ask a rental operator about the day’s conditions and boundaries.
